Here's a little pre-holiday gift from me to you. A couple of people have asked me to post my pattern for the cabled felted slippers. I thought I probably shouldn't be spending my time drafting patterns since I'm supposed to be working on the dissertation. But I managed to find the time over a couple of weeks to draft the pattern in two widths, and have dubbed it "Cable Guy." The file is available as a PDF, so click the link to Download cable_guy_slippers.pdf
You can also click the link in the sidebar under the optimistic heading, "Julia's Free Patterns," since if this goes well, I hope to draft more of my originals for your knitting pleasure. Drafting the pattern was harder than I imagined. It took graphic design skills I never thought I would use in the service of knitting. And I'm still not 100% satisfied with the way the pattern looks. For one thing, the photo could be better - I'm not the world's best photographer. And for another thing, converting the charts and legends, importing them to Adobe Illustrator in order to add notations, and then converting the whole schmear to JPEG format was quite a process. One of the charts has an off-register grey box on two of the stitches, and that bugs me. But it would have taken still more time to redo the whole thing, so I chose to try to ignore it. I hope you will too.
A couple of notes: This pattern was drafted for a specific bulky weight wool yarn, Gjestal Naturegaarn. I can't possibly predict what would happen if you tried to knit it in worsted or in another brand of bulky weight wool yarn, since they all felt very differently. The sizes for this pattern are really widths - there is a medium width, and a wide width. These are intended to be wider than a typical women's width.
The slipper length is adjustable, and there is a handy chart so you can figure it out based on the intended recipient's foot length measured from back of heel to tip of toe. The instep patterns are presented both as written patterns and as charts. I have tried to be as diligent about proofreading as is humanly possible, but this is the first pattern I have attempted to draft for public consumption. Please let me know in the kindest way possible if you find an error. Other than that, I hope you all enjoy this pattern! It's perfect for a last minute holiday gift for those hard-to-buy-for guys. Happy knitting!
